Why Fisherman?

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Matt 4:18-20
Have you ever thought about why the first two folks on the list of recruits for Team Jesus were fisherman? As he put together the people that would "do life" with him for his ministry on earth he chose fisherman. And when he came to them, they were doing what they did...fishing!  Perhaps he went after Peter and his brother Andrew because they understood what it was like to cast out a net and wait. People may respond to the Gospel like fish at times, wiggling away or trying to swim through the net. Or maybe it was because their character was not to quit just because the nets didn't have any fish in them. Instead they would go out every day to try again. Maybe it was because fisherman are…

Fat and Flourishing

Psalm 92:12 "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.13 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing." When was the last time you had a buffet for your spirit? Consider God's Word as an all you can eat buffet that is open 24 hours a day for your enjoyment! In order to flourish as you and I were intended to we must eat the right things. Feasting on His Word will build up your faith and cause you to be filled with incredible power and strength. Some Exciting News to Share!!!

Image
We've got some exciting news to share with you! Out of the six books that we have made available to our friends through Cup of Joe, Inc., "Transitions: Grace to Navigate the Storms of Change" is one that needed an e-book so people could download it on their phones, Kindles and iPads. It was one of our goals this year to complete this and because of your donations of support and prayers, we are about to do that!!! Everyone goes through TRANSITIONS- and this book has blessed thousands of people. One of my favorite memories at The Landing was our Transitions class where we went through this book over 10 weeks as a small group. Now you will be able to do that too! But wait there's more!!! Since we are doing an e-book format for the Transitions book, we decided to go ahead and do an e-book for a brand new one called "friends4ever" at the same time:) That's right, I am about to introduce you to the 4 friends that YOU NEED in your life to be in the sweet spot…

Live Your Life

Image
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.   Colossians 2:6-7 I pray that today, YOU are a fully devoted follower of Christ. If so, you must live your life as one. LIVE YOUR LIFE in Him. What does that mean? Look at this scripture closely and we can see some amazing benefits. You must be rooted in Him. The deeper the roots, the stronger the life. You deepen your roots through developing your relationship with Him. That relationship grows through prayer (communication). You nourish the roots by reading His Word. Try taking a few moments at the start of each day to read the Bible. By becoming more deeply rooted in Him, two things will happen: you will be built up and strengthened. He will lift you up when you are down and help you out when you feel helpless. His power will become your power. His strength will be your strength. Faith will …

Enjoy Life!

“Enjoy life. This is not a dress rehearsal.”  I ran across this quote today and it made me think about many things. Let me share a couple random thoughts. First of all, I don't like dress rehearsals. I would rather just do the performance once in costume and not have to go through all of the "dress up"! To me it always feel's painful to go through all of that for a "practice" session. Secondly, could you imagine what it would be like if we got a second chance because this was only practice? I love "do-overs"! Made a mistake today....do-over! Said something you wish you could take back...do-over! The point of this quote is that we should take seriously the seconds, minutes, hours and days of our lives and spend our time carefully. Once it's spent, it's gone. We don't get to "dress up" and run through this once and then the real thing. This IS it! There are no do-overs. I think that is why the Lord wants us to acknowledge Him so …

The Gospel According to Manilow

Image
A few years ago I was sitting in the living room, reminiscing about the 70's.  Most of you know that I am a fan of the 70's and 80's music. In fact I was inspired to go to music school after seeing a Barry Manilow concert in Columbus Ohio in 1977. I've never forgotten that. Nor can I forget the birthday that I received a signed photo from him with a special wish. Those were some good days! So as a tribute to Mr. Manilow, here is a cup of joe featuring some popular song titles. It was God who said first, “I write the songs that make the whole world sing. But I can’t smile without you. You and I are not like two ships that pass in the night. We are One Voice. With me you can weather life’s storms. And one day you will say, I’ve made it through the rain.” So Even Now, we've got to stop asking ourselves could this be the magic and stop tryin’ to get the feelin’ again. It’s daybreakLet’s hang on to what we’ve got because it looks like we made it to where God wanted us …

Lead Me to the Rock

From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed;  Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2 Every single day I find myself needing to be surrounded by the spirit of God. There are moments in life when challenges and difficulties come against you and you you find out how strong(or weak) you really are. When we feel overwhelmed, its usually because we are carrying things that we should not carry and involved with things in our own power and strength. When life throws rocks at you, pray this little prayer... "Lord lead me to the Rock that is higher than me." Lord lift me up out of the mess and feed my spirit the message that you want me to understand in the midst of all of this.  Set my feet on solid ground. You are the Rock that is stable. Help me to cast all of my cares upon you. Teach me how to exchange the heavy things for those that you have given me strength to handle. I may not understand all of it but I can stand under it! Today I am …

Wavering

There are many people these days that seem to be getting seasick. They are not committing themselves wholly to the things the Lord wants to do with them. They have difficulty making a decision and they second-guess most of the ones that they do make. Have you ever done that? Talked yourself right out of something that you felt the Lord was saying to you?
James 1 tells us in verse 6: "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God" because he will not hesitate in giving insight to you. It then goes on to warn us about "wavering". Wavering is what happens when we become indecisive. We are unsettled like a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. That leads to double-mindedness and what I call seasickness. Seasick people are unstable in ALL ways. You and I won't always know what the right things to do is but the Lord does know. And all that is required of us is to ask and then hold on to our faith in what we know He can do. The winds will blow and the wave…

Don't Neglect the Gift

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 1 Timothy 4:14
Have you ever been in a church service where you witnessed people speaking words of encouragement over each other and laying hands on them? When the elders of the church came together, prayed and spoke over people they would lay hands on them to commission them for service. This is what a presbytery service looks like. The first time I saw this was many years ago and it was a bit strange then but very intriguing to me. The words were “prophetic”, they built up the individuals they were spoken too and many of the people smiled, wept and were captivated by these divine moments. It was uplifting to everyone in the service because God was speaking and His power was being poured out. Paul was talking to young preacher Timothy in this setting, counseling him on how to move forward with his church when seasons are tough and people are difficult to deal w…

Does the Load Feel Heavy?

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John‬ 5:1-5‬ NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬
Have you ever felt completely out of control? Like you had no power or faith to deal with what you were facing? If you have ever felt the weight of life's challenges it may be because you've forgotten how to wait on life's Champion. The part of this text that leaped out at me is when it reminds us that “his commands are not burdensome”. Everyone who is born of God overcomes. So if we are overwhelmed it's because we are not overcoming! If…

Blind Spots

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear those words: blind spots? Mine goes to driving and those places that I am unable to see until its too late when I travel down the road. I think that’s what bothers me so much about blind spots is that it seems you aren’t really aware of them until its too late. All of us have said at one time or another, "I didn't see that coming!" Blind spots are not simply a driving hazard. We can have relational blind spots and spiritual blind spots too. Things can go off course and cause damage before you even realize that there is a problem. So how do we deal with them? Will they go away?

BIG BLOCK LETTERS

I've always been a bit futuristic. I love to dream and imagine how great things can become. People die because they lack vision. I do not want to be one of those casualties. In the book of Habakkuk it refers to the Lord answering the prophet as he was seeking some explanation to the current events. The Lord answered... "Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
pointing to what's coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
And it doesn't lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
It's on its way. It will come right on time."
A friend of mine once told me that when it is on the paper it is off the mind. He was encouraging me to write down things so that my mind would not get cluttered and overloaded. To this day, I journal and draw, make lists and take notes to help me catalog my thoughts and secure my ideas for eternity. I like this scripture from the Message bibl…

At the Right Time

Image
Yesterday this Instagram post stayed with me through the day and I awoke today meditating on the simple words..."humble yourself". According to Proverbs, the wisdom of Solomon, humility will always arrive before honor. When we are able to submit to the Lord and the way He desires to work, great things will happen. Situations will become better, good people will show up, even policies and regulations can change for your benefit and God's glory. At just the right time, God will "lift" us up...place us in an honorable role or position and show His glory in the process.  So today, add a spoonful of humility to your cup of joe and then share a cup with someone else that needs to see the Lord show up in a mighty way in their lives. Bless you!!!

Earning a Good Reputation

There is a proverb that states "a good name is better than desirable riches." Your words are important. Your actions even more so. And your name, well that is beneficial in many ways but a good name, a solid reputation has to be earned.
Proverbs 3:1 My child, never forget the things I have taught you.
Store my commands in your heart.
2 If you do this, you will live many years,
and your life will be satisfying.
3 Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!
Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.
4 Then you will find favor with both God and people,
and you will earn a good reputation.
You don't earn the kind of rep we are talking about today through acquisition of things. It's not even tied to your lineage or where you stack up in society. Earning a good reputation comes from storing up the things that God says and using them in daily living. You have to read or listen to the Bible to keep a surplus of those commands. Faith comes when you hear i…

Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Purity is a choice. It is defined as the freedom from anything that debases, contaminates and pollutes. You have to choose to stay away from things that could defile you. The farther you move from what defiles you the closer you move to what defines you. A farmer went to the market to sell among other things, the cottage cheese and apple butter he made on his farm. He carried them in two large tubs of which he ladled out each one into the smaller containers that he sold. One day when he got to the Market, he realized that he had forgotten one of the ladles. He had no choice but to use one ladle for both products. Before long the two products had gotten so mixed up that you could hardly tell the difference. You see when the child of God loses their purity, they are no longer different and distinct from the world. You and I are created to be like "Him", Jesus that is. To be holy as He is holy. To be in the world but not of the world. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall…
