Seek and Find

Image
Seek the Lord while He may be found,  Call upon Him while He is near. IS 55:7 SEEKING…I used to think that prayer was asking the Lord for something that He desired to give me and I would receive it. As I continue growing in my understanding I can see that sometimes asking needs another level...sometimes I need to put some legs with the words. Jesus said ask me and then He said SEEK me. Once you have you vocalized your petition, you can start to initialize it by moving in the direction of the answer. In Christ there is a 100% guarantee. Jesus said that those that would SEEK him would FIND him. There’s no frustration, no disappointment.  It reminds me of my kids when they were little. They loved to play hide and seek and my two boys were a bit older than my daughter Jordan so they would have a little edge. When Jordan played she would always go hide, and wait only for a short time and then she would say, "I’m over here!" She wanted to be found! I believe that is how the Lord is.…

Vulnerability

Image
This week one word has been on my mind each and every day…vulnerability. I’ve heard it spoken in several settings and it prompted me to look deeper into its meaning and impact. By definition, vulnerability is the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally. Yikes, that’s not anything I need! But I also believe that vulnerability allows you to be loved and cared for, as well as to love others in a deeper and more meaningful way. Sounds a bit risky doesn’t it? Exposing our heart to another person is scary for sure, especially if you have ever been hurt in a relationship before. Nobody wants to experience pain over and over again. Broken hearts seem to take forever to heal. Being vulnerable opens up our heart and makes a way for others to get to know who we truly are. The real you can come out. So how can you protect yourself from the darker side of vulnerability? Well, you can’t. But the Lord can walk with you through …

Living the Salt Life

Image
Several years ago, while on a summer trip through Florida, I added a sticker to my car window from a popular southern clothing line called Salt Life. Those two words had a significant meaning to me. I believe it's important for me to be living the "salt life". Jesus told us this: “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?" He said that we should be salt. Salt adds flavor to anything that it is sprinkled on. When you and I are the "salt" we add the flavor of favor! Every day I need to remind myself that Jesus wants me to truly live this “salt life”. And as I do, I make a special effort to be the "salt" to those around me. I want to be flavor-full and favor-filled. I want to bring "sodium to the podium" when I preach or teach. I need to stay salty:) How about your life today? Have you lost your flavor? Have the difficulties and challenges robbed you of a life sprinkled with God’s favor? Jesus did not say…

Walk the Talk

Image
2 Timothy 3:5..."having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." One of the gentle reminders that God is coming back again will be seasons of lawlessness, chaos, wars, earthquakes and other phenomenon. People will be lovers of themselves and their money. They will boast of all THEY have done.  They will be unforgiving, rash, conceited and full of pride, lacking any self-control. You don't have to be a genius to recognize that many of the characteristics of 2 Timothy are up close and personal on the news today in this world that we live in. Yet with all the horrible things happening we should not be afraid but rather be compelled to get closer to Christ. Some people will have a "form of godliness". I always wondered exactly what that meant. Perhaps it means that they will talk the talk but fail to walk it out. Or they will use the name of the Lord but never see a manifestation of His power. How could anyone deny that the Lor…

Why Do We Worry?

Image
Do you think it is even possible to live a life with “no worries”? Like that song Hakuna Matata? Life really is too short to worry about things that we can’t change anyway. So I guess the better question is, why then do we worry?
First of all, it could be because our image of God is not as big as the image of our difficulty. The reason Jesus tried to teach us about anxiety is because he knew it would come. Anxiety comes from the word anxiousness…being too anxious for something that has not happened to happen or visa-versa. In this world Jesus said you WILL have trouble. There will be lots that you could worry about. But he said BE OF GOOD CHEER, I have overcome the world. Jesus is bigger than any problem that you may face. Could I really believe that God could take this BIG mess and untangle it so that I could enjoy life again? Can I live a good life though my business has folded? Is there life after divorce? Can God use someone like me that has been through things I would never want to…

Groundbreaking Breakthrough

Image
Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.  Hosea 10:12 Sow for YOU! Imagine that! Planting something for YOUR life! YOU will reap the fruit of unfailing love. However, you may have to do some groundbreaking to start the process. If you want something you have never had you are going to have to do something you have never done. Break up the ground that is unplowed. Move some earth. Groundbreaking is the first thing we do before we build. We are building something with our lives so we prepare the ground to accommodate what we are building. Break up the ground and get it ready for what is coming. God is getting ready to bless you and you want that blessing to find a nice open spot to land in. Some may ask how long do we seek the Lord? Hosea said it best, "until He comes and showers righteousness on you". In other words, you keep seeking u…

Complacency

Image
One of the wonderful things about life as a follower of Jesus is that it is ever changing. It’s not static, its dynamic. In fact when we read about the power that Christ gave to us…what he referred to in Acts 1:8...what he said that the disciples should wait for…was POWER. The word for power was “dunamis” where we get the word dynamite…in other words, dynamic power! If we can get our eyes on Christ, replace our agenda with His, then we open ourselves up to unlimited potential and possibility. The power that we tap into is explosive and transforming. There are no boring days when we wake up each day to serve a God whose mercies are "new every morning." His guidance is a steady stream, living water flowing into our lives… constant and consistent. He’s the tour guide that never gets out ahead of you…. the tour guide that makes it possible to understand Him as He is giving directions. He knows the way and all we have to do is follow. Maybe today you are in a rut, bored, and lif…

Leaving the Comfort Zone

Image
For the past couple of weeks I have been on an adventure. I took a trip to somewhere that I’ve never been. I left my comfort zone to explore places that I haven’t experienced in years. I’m a single man, working in a spiritual environment and living in a gated community. My boundaries are firmly established by my surroundings and me. But in 2018, I wanted to say “yes” to whatever the Lord wanted to do with me. What do I crave at this stage of my life…companionship. Someone to share my day with, my dreams with and my heart with. And the Lord brought me to an opportunity to teach a Singles Class. If you are laughing a little bit right now, I get it. I have never even gone to a singles event at a church in my entire life. The funny thing about Jesus is that He knows what you need even when you are oblivious. Maybe it's because He is mapping out the journey:) I work at an amazing church and was afforded the honor and privilege to teach a series on “Relationship Essentials for Single A…

Chin Up Buttercup!

Image
"I never said it would be easy. I only said it would be worth it." This Mae West quote says it all when it comes to facing the giants in life. Nothing worthwhile ever happens without some adversity and challenge. In fact, without the adversity and the struggle, we would have no need to exercise faith or rely on the strength of the Lord. If you never had to be strong, you'd never know how strong you could be! Ephesians 6 tells us to "be strong in The Lord and in the power of His might". There are things that we will face that can only be defeated with Gods power. Our power is simply not enough. So if you are facing something tough or life just seemed to get away from you, trust in the Lord. Be strong. Be strong in His power! When you are your weakest He becomes the strongest! Chin up buttercup!

Trouble that Produces Glory

Image
For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
This is a great little reminder out of 2 Corinthians 4. Not everything is going to go your way. Sometimes life can get messy and there can be challenges. Jesus never said that there wouldn't be troubles. He said just the opposite! BUT, the Good News is that those troubles WILL go away. You and I will become stronger because of them. The difficulties will produce incredible blessings if we simply trust the Lord and hold on to His Word. It seems that people are overwhelmed these days with so many things. And I’m certain that we would all probably say that our problems do not fall into that “small” category! The size of the trouble should not be the focus. We need to see the size of our God. And our God says that whatever the challenges are, they will not last long. In fact, they will produce something in us that is eternal. Imagine that; glory …

Life is Like a Puzzle

Image
Have you ever wished that you could figure out your life more quickly? Has it ever felt like one big puzzle and some of the pieces are missing? Has it been hard making the pieces fit? I find myself wishing at times that God gave me a longer look at the BIG picture of His plan for me so that I could find the right pieces to put this puzzle together. All I seem to get are what I call "glimpses of glory"; quick looks at what WILL BE if I just keep putting the puzzle together one.
Several years ago during our family vacation in the summer we tried to put a huge puzzle together. The puzzle had thousands of pieces and it was quite overwhelming at first. To me it looked impossible and very time consuming. I tried to get it started and put the edges together because they are the easiest for me. Same thing with my life. Setting the boundaries is the easiest part. Trying to figure out what goes inside is the hard part! Same with the puzzle. The inside pieces are the hardest because m…

Time of Transition

Image
Several years ago I had the pleasure of filming a little tv spot for a local cable program. The question: "What would you say to someone that is going through a"transition"?: i.e. moving into a new city, a new home, a new relationship, out of one, to a job, from a job...you get the picture. The time limit...you will have about 60 seconds!!! WOW! What a challenge! If all of my personal transitions lasted as long as this tv spot, I would be golden! Unfortunately they do not. Most of my transitions just seem to happen in a way similar to my being born. For nine months I wear prepared and the moment I "came forth", the first thing they did was flip me upside down and spank me! Then they scraped me raw with a rag to clean me up and placed my under some hot lights like a pack of fries at McDonalds! After everything settled, they put my spotless, dew rag covered head in a plastic cart on wheels and led me to the showroom for everyone to see. It was a bit traumatic b…

Every Spiritual Blessing

Image
Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.  Think about that for a moment...you are blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing! There is nothing that you will need to live your godly life that is not available to you in come capacity in your life. So smile, lift up your head and thank the Lord!  Don't try to figure everything out. You don't have to know why everything is the way it is. Life is a bit odd. Sometimes it doesn't make sense. Like why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway? Or why isn't "phonetics" spelled like it sounds? If olive oil is made from olives, what is baby oil made from? Or if ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy? All kidding aside, I am blessed. YOU are blessed...not just with some good fortune and luck. YOU and I are blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ! Because you and I are united in Christ,…
