S is for Spiritual

This is going to be a SUPER week...the week leading up to the SUPER Bowl and the 2nd largest consumption of food day in the year. (Super Bowl Sunday ranks 2nd behind Thanksgiving) Though everything this week will be called SUPER, we will say that S is for SPIRITUAL. Ephesians 1:3 says, " Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." As you begin today see yourself as a spiritual being that has been empowered by every spiritual blessing that God can give. You have the ability to make good decisions. You have been chosen to develop some great relationships. And because God cares for you enough to bless you this way you have every possible chance for SUPERnatural success! So let your spirit rise up and live the life in the spirit that God has chosen for you. Romans 12:11 reminds us to "never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord." You do n

" Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions " - Albert Einstein There have been a few moments in my life(I wish there were more) when I see mental pictures of things that God has planned for my future. In fact, the very dream that I feel like I was put on the planet to fulfill was a snapshot in my head before it became a poster on the wall of our church. My Dream Scripture tells us to "write down the vision so that others can read it and run with it". Make it clear...crystal clear! Whenever I have a dream or see something in my head I like to make a journal note for two reasons. First of all, so that it will get cleared from my head and second, so that I remember it later. I think it's important to catalog in writing what is cataloged in your mind. Everyone should journal thoughts because thoughts become actions and actions produce results. My prayer for you today is that you will let your IMAGE-ination run wild and dream

Enjoy Life!

“Enjoy life. This is not a dress rehearsal. ”  I ran across this quote today and it made me think about many things. Let me share a couple random thoughts. First of all, I don't like dress rehearsals. I would rather just do the performance once in costume and not have to go through all of the "dress up"! To me it always feel's painful to go through all of that for a "practice" session. Secondly, could you imagine what it would be like if we got a second chance because this was only practice? I love "do-overs"! Made a mistake! Said something you wish you could take! The point of this quote is that we should take seriously the seconds, minutes, hours and days of our lives and spend our time carefully. Once it's spent, it's gone. We don't get to "dress up" and run through this once and then the real thing. This IS it! There are no do-overs. I think that is why the Lord wants us to acknowledge Him

Wide Open Spaces

" Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Matt 7:13-14 This scripture always makes me think about the places that I go and the things that I do. I often want the path of least resistance and that would mean that I would opt for the wider opening. I like wide open spaces. It appears that there will always be much more distractions, opportunities and activity around things that may be harmful. The key is to get our vision focused on the single answer to life's issues and troubles: Jesus. There are opportunities and activities in serving Him also but when we focus on Him, we just don't get swayed by all of the other stuff. Today, rub your eyes and take another good look at the things in front of you. Seek first His kingdom and His way of doing things(life) and everything else will come to you:)

The Year of Courageous Living

I have chosen this year to live my life more courageously . It is my theme for the year and I have been studying the Book of Joshua and how the Lord prepared him to cross over the Jordan and to defeat the enemies in the city of Jericho. This story will make something rise up inside of you and stand up for what you believe. You will face danger of pain and no one will see you sweat! I can't remember the last time I commented on an issue or question that I had seen on television or read in the paper.  I usually side on the soft, gentle and simple side of encouraging people. Hopefully it is a fresh blend of inspiration for the daily grind. But after a 12 hour day at the office and an hour to sit at home and unwind, my ears caught a clip from an interview with pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen and Piers Morgan. So I I watched a clip from the interview which airs on the Piers Morgan show the 26th of January. Piers got into the subject of homosexuality and asked if it was a sin. Pastor

Trumpets and Voices

I've been talking to our church about Joshua and how Jericho was  brought to the ground. If you read about the story you see that it was all done with horns and shouts. For 12 laps they were not allowed to speak! On the 13th time around Jericho, everything changed! I don’t believe that I’ve ever heard of a demolition project that just required trumpets and voices to accomplish. Yet I can see the power that is available from God if we would worship and speak as He directs. I’ve seen praise and worship music soften hearts to the point of breaking before God and opening up to a new day I’ve heard words formed into a testimony that caused strongholds in others to crumble as they were spoken. Trumpets and voices, worship and praise will tear down walls of division and fortresses of evil. COURAGEOUS living requires us to bring down strongholds Gods way. I personally believe that God told the people to be quiet because some of the folks in the group did not believe this could be do

Rekindle the Fire

" In everyone's life at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. " Albert Schweitzer In a world made up of people and relationships there are going to be folks we meet that cause us to burn and ones that cause us to burn out. As I felt the heat from the fireplace during our snow day in Tulsa yesterday i thought about how quickly we can be fanned into flame by divine encounters. God is putting our steps together and weaving a beautiful tapestry with our lives that can bless the world and bring us complete happiness. If your fire is going out, check the connections you have. If the people in your life don't ignite the dreams that God has planted in you to come forth, it may be time for some new encounters. Let God fan into flame the gift that He has placed within you and watch how he uses others to burst that gift into a blazing inf

Steppin Out and Steppin In

We've been talking about Joshua at church and how to live a COURAGEOUS life. Part of that journey includes the incredible crossing of the Jordan River. The Jordan River was an obstacle that stood between where Joshua was and where God wanted him to be. You may have something right now that is a big hindrance to your doing what God intended you to do. The Jordan was usual only 100 feet across but at this particular time because it was flood stage, it was almost one mile across! How in the world can you get across that? There is a great lesson in Chapter 3 of Joshua. Simply stated its this: " if you are willing to get your feet wet, God can keep your feet dry ". Most of us lack the courage to not just step out but to step in to what we should be doing. When the priests stepped into the water, it dried up and the entire nation walked through without getting their feet wet! Let this be the day that you not only step out, you step in too. It's time to get to the other si

1 Samuel 22:1   David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father's household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2  All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him . David was on the run and trying to escape Saul. His talent, his personality, his character were rubbing Saul the wrong way. All he was doing was living life the best that he knew how and serving his God. I wonder if any of you can relate to the feeling of being ridiculed or resented for simply being yourself and moving forward in faith and power? Years ago when I began The Landing Community Church, I wanted to help people that had been abused or wounded by ministry or ministers. I intentionally went after people that were hurting. Our church is still focused on helping those that others abandon. we champion the underdog. and like David, those that are in distress or in de

What are THEY saying?

PSALM 3:1   Lord , how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! 2  Many are saying of me, "God will not deliver him." There have been many times in my life where I felt like the world was out to get me. Like the main reason other people existed was to torment me and bring difficulty into my life. Maybe you have had some seasons like that too. The old saying "when it rains it pours" can ring true many times. The good news is that God did not plan for you to live life overwhelmed, frustrated and all stressed up with no place to go! John 10 tells us that Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly. That means your need will be met; your spiritual, physical, financial and emotions need will not go unfulfilled. You can and will be delivered! David was facing great adversity. Enemies were coming out of the woodwork to harm him. Their taunts would be loud. "God will not deliver him" they would say.  Just remember today that what THEY are sayin

Like Riding a Bike

Have you ever had one of those weeks that seemed absolutely filled with activity, saturated in promise and ended at an even higher level than it started? They don't happen often but when they do you just want to smile and say thank you Lord for bringing everything together like you did this week. The first time I rode a bike my parents held on to it until I got going and then something interesting happened. They let go! Fear and excitement elevated to incredibly high levels at the same time. I got so scared I forgot where I was going and I was so excited I forgot that I was scared! Living by faith can be exhilarating and sometimes scary. But God tells us two things that he told Joshua: " I will not fail you and I'll never forsake you ". (Joshua 1:5) You can take your journey down the path knowing that God is with you, cheering you on and helping you to be absolutely successful and prosperous. So go ahead and pedal forward with confidence! You are going to be fine!

Divine Companionship

We close our COURAGEOUS week with one more verse from Joshua 1... " Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous . Do not be afraid ; do not be discouraged , for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. " Clearly we can see that fear will take courage out of our lives. Fear is the opposite of faith and it paralyzes the person and keeps them from moving in faith. When fear rises up, faith must be initiated. Faith comes by hearing so its very important to hear words of hope and inspiration.  The way to be certain that divine power and intervention will always be close is to be strong and courageous. In fact God commands it. Divine companionship chases away loneliness. Loneliness is not a loss of affection, its a loss of direction!  Face the danger of pain. That task you have been putting off because of the pending drama that could come from it...face it. That relationship that continues to drain life and joy from your very core...face it. God does not brin

Meditate Day & Night

Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8  Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful . Courageous living is not difficult if we can follow the plan. Joshua had a big project ahead of him...taking a few million people across a swollen river to a land filled with giant grapes! He needed courage. " Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow. " (Mary Anne Radmacher) This week we have seen that courage begins with obedience to God. Thinking straight and speaking out. Today we talk about meditating on that Word . It really means to go over and over it again in your head until

Speak Out

Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8   Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth ; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful . This week we are taking a peak into a COURAGEOUS life. How can we be strong and courageous in every area? Yesterday we looked at how to keep thinking straight. Today we see how important it is to speak out. But we must speak the right things. Reading on in our verse we see that it says don't let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth. In other words, you and I have got to keep speaking this word to each other and to ourselves. Courageous Voices speaking courageous words. Speaking out rather than holding in. Faith comes by hearing. We speak it not so God can hear us reading but so

Thinking Straight

Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left , that you may be successful wherever you go. 8  Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful . This week we are taking a peak into a COURAGEOUS life. Joshua was now at the helm and readying himself to lead the people into the land that God promised them. Before he would take a step, God would give some specific instructions. Today we pull two of those guidelines out of verse 7.  Obedience and thinking straight will make you successful. Successful WHEREVER you go! At the office, at home even at church! Too many people get distracted and start allowing their focus to be broken. Looking to the left and the right can cause you to trip up over the path and plan that God has set up for you

Yesterday at The Landing I revealed our KeyWord for the year 2011. This year that word is COURAGEOUS . Our focus this month is on the man Joshua and how he took the reigns when his mentor and teacher , Moses, passed away. Joshua was handed the task of finishing the journey to the Promised Land. But when you read our golden text for this year you can see that he was given so much more.  Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous . This week I would like to comment on many wonderful points in these two verses that I believe can help us get through the obstacles and into the place that God desires us to be. Maybe you are at a crossroads at work a

Perfectly Clear

I hope you have enjoyed this "perfect" week and are off to a great start for 2011! Living life for Christ is the only way to experience perfect love, perfect peace, the perfect gift and His perfect strength. The older I get the more evident it becomes that people have added so much to the things that the Bible says. Even to those precious "words in red", the ones that Jesus said, we seem to make some personal embellishments. Throughout my life in the church there have been many seasons. In fact if you were to ask me what denomination I belong to I would tell you that I am a presbymethobatissemblycathocostal. A spiritual mutt I guess. I have seen many things and enjoyed what each of the denominations can offer. But what did Jesus say was important? To lift your hands when you praise Him? To kneel when you receive communion? To dance when you are happy in God or to speak in tongues? Let me pass on to you what Jesus said. You'll find it in Mark 12. The Pharisees

Perfect Strength

God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect. PS 18:32 Years ago there was a song written by Steven Curtis Chapman which went like this: His strength is perfect when our strength is gone He'll carry us when we can't carry on Raised in His power the weak become strong His strength is perfect Since each and every one of us has gone through or is going through some sort of difficulty that at times can zap us of all our strength, it's refreshing to know about this divine reserve. His power begins when mine ends. His strength carries over when I just want to give in. He arms ME with perfect strength. Today as you face your challenges and find yourself feeling a bit tired and exhausted, just open up your hands, lift your eyes up to the heavens, smile, and thank God for coming into your life with His perfect strength! His perfect strength will make a perfect way! "Be strong IN THE LORD, and in HIS MIGHTY POWER!"

Perfect Gift

" Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows ." James 1:17 What is the perfect gift? Most of us would probably answer that question by saying that it would be something that we wanted very much. Some would lean to something that they really need. What we want and what we need may be far different things! The good news today is that God gave you a gift. A good and perfect gift. When you ask the Lord to live in your heart, that heart is changed. It is made new. It feels different, loves different, and causes you to act and speak differently too. For someone that battles heart disease, a new heart is the perfect gift.(literally and figuratively) Like all of God's gifts, a new heart is not only something we want but also something we need. God always gives the perfect gift. When you live your life for Christ you realize that you are "gifted" in so many ways. Living a lif

Perfect Peace

With perfect peace you will protect those whose  minds cannot be changed, because they trust you. Isaiah 26:3 One of the names given to Jesus is the Prince of Peace. We know through reading His word that where chaos and confusion is, he cannot be. Evil resides in the midst of confusion. In the last 2 days many people have asked me about the birds and the fish that died in Arkansas. This story has prompted many people to ask the question "what does the Bible say?"Seems there is some confusion over these events and what they mean. Though there is not any specific reference to multitudes of fish and fowl turning up dead, there is something that all of us should know. Know Him, know peace. No Him, no peace. You can be absolutely certain that there will be many unexplainable phenomenons that occur from now until Jesus comes back for His church. The best way to handle the curiosity and to answer your questions is to develop a relationship with Christ. The Bible is clear on many

Perfect Love

The bible tells us that " perfect love casts out fear ." I have to be honest today and say that I am not really sure what perfect love is. I am quite certain that I have not experienced it because I seem to be afraid of so many things. Afraid of being hurt by others, afraid of giving away too much, afraid of running out of strength...the list goes on and on. Fact is that perfect love has only come once. It came in the form of a baby that grew up to become a man and have a mission to save mankind and to die for all of our sins. That love was unconditional. That love was selfless. That love took away all fear of death. Now all we have to do is ask Jesus to live in our heart. Love came down to live in us and move through us. Getting through fear can be challenging. You wont be able to accomplish it without more power. Be strong IN THE LORD and the POWER of HIS MIGHT. Don't fear. He's already beat the thing that is trying to beat you. Surrender control and let Him guide
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter and God will write your story as you let Him lead you through His plan. Trust Him and enjoy the journey. May you see a little slice of heaven  in 2011! Happy New Year!
