Live a Free Life

Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you. EPH 5:1 Freedom is a good thing. It's even a God thing. Christ HAS set us free so that we can live a free life. To do so will require us to make adjustments. Why? Because freedom doesn't always mean liberty. Think about it. When the children of Israel were liberated out of Egypt, they were set free of the bondage of Pharaoh. But it wasn't long until they could be heard grumbling about the way it was over where they were. They had to learn to adjust to the new found liberty and take a stand IN freedom. As Moses began to lead them and God began to orchestrate a plan to bring them to a land of promise, they had to deal with this new life and the "rules" that God was setting up for them so that they could live the free life.  They began to look at this freedom as a new kind of bondage . They were seeing this as a harness of slavery rather tha

David Stayed Home

In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 11:1 David stayed home. Kings were supposed to go off and lead their troops in battle during the spring. But David stayed home. What happened next was devastating. Today I thought about all of those awful things that I've experienced in my life when I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Being out of balance, out of position and out of line always leads to trouble. It was during this idle season that David found himself gazing at the neighbors wife and well, the downward spiral was huge. David wrecked himself, the family he betrayed and brought horrific consequences to his own family. There are always consequences for bad behavior.  Someone once said idle hands are the devils workshop. Isolating yourself in a time when you should be connecting with othe

A Generous Man

" A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Proverbs 11:25 There are many things in the Bible that seem strange...things like the first shall be last. Or to be the greatest of all you must be a servant of all. Often it reads as if up were down and left was right. Reading closer in the context of these words, you begin to see what Jesus was wanting to teach us. This scripture out of Proverbs is a bit more straightforward but with a little twist. A generous man will prosper. If you give your life away then you really can live your life today. Giving your time, money and talent opens up an amazing conduit between you and all that the Lord wants to keep sending your direction. Resources flow freely. And when you spend time refreshing others, you soon realize that you were also being refreshed along the way! Choose to bless a colleague or friend today and unclog your conduit of good things. Be generous. Not because you have it. B

Who Touched Me?

Mark 5:30-31  At the same moment, Jesus felt energy discharging from him. He turned around to the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” His disciples said, “What are you talking about? With this crowd pushing and jostling you, you’re asking, ‘Who touched me?’ Dozens have touched you !”  In Mark 5 there is a story about Jesus was walking with a bunch of folks on the way to Jairus' home to heal his daughter. There was a lot of activity as they went until suddenly, Jesus stopped and asked a simple question:"who touched me?" The disciples told him that everyone was brushing up against him. What are you talking about? But Jesus had felt the touch of someone that had "pulled" power from him. It was a woman who had been sick for 12 years. She had done everything she knew to do. But right there on that day and in that moment, she thought to herself that if she could just get a finger on Jesus, she could be well. She thought about faith without realizing the pow

How do I know when the season is changing?

Change happens every day. People change. Places change. And through it all, we change. So why do so many people dislike change? Would it be beneficial if we could somehow forecast when change was about to occur and then prepare ourselves for it?  In this weekends #saturdaysmiles video, I take the first question from my latest book, CH8NGE? and offer a couple of suggestions to how you can know when a season is changing in your life.  "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." I Can't Take it Anymore

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed  beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it .  In fact, we expected to die. But as a result,  we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God , who raises the dead. And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us. And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety . 2 Cor 1:8-11 Each one of us can probably relate to the idea that we have faced something that absolutely overwhelmed us beyond our ability to endure. You've probably even said, " I can't take this anymore !" Paul is describing some pretty dark times when hope was gone and so was the belief that they would survive. I guess

Goodness and Mercy

I was reading Psalm 23 had a moment of joy as I read that “goodness and mercy” were following me every day. I used to have a great picture of that in my own life. I had a little miniature dachshund named Midnight. ( I called him Midi) When I would come home from work, he was so thrilled to see me. He  always  acknowledged me. I noticed one day as I walked through the house that he followed me wherever I went. No matter what room I went into or how long I stayed there, he stayed with me and moved with me. As I laughed at his companionship I thought about God’s goodness and God’s mercy. Goodness to help me make quality decisions and mercy to help me when I don’t make such good decisions. It’s always nice to know that whenever we take a hit in life’s journey, whenever we are attacked with such a strong force that we fall backwards…that we will fall into the goodness and mercy of God that is following us all the days of our lives. Who's following you?

Bowlful of Water

Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised-  look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said." And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew— a bowlful of water ."  Judges 6: 36-38 Isn't this like most of us... "bargaining" with the Lord? God if you will do this for me, I'll serve you forever! I'll do some things for my church if you will (put your request here). For Gideon, it was a  bowlful of water  that changed everything...for a minute. He then went on to ask God prove himself again and reverse the process: to make the wool dry and the ground wet! Can't you just see the smile on the face of God? This could have been the first use of the term..."really"? Walking in faith requires you and I to sim

Praise Looks Good On You

Rejoice in the L ORD , you righteous ones;  praise from the upright is beautiful . PS 33:1 Some of the most memorable moments I have enjoyed are seeing my children in productions where they act, sing or play an instrument. Whether it was an elementary school function or a church worship service, the feeling was always the same...a proud father with a huge smile on his face loving what he was seeing on the faces of his children. This scripture out of the psalms tells us something that we must never forget... praise looks good on you ! There is nothing more beautiful than watching a room filled with true worshippers. I can imagine my heavenly Father watching from heaven and seeing my face and hearing my voice as I exalt His name and sing His praises. I believe that just as I felt proud and grinned from ear to ear watching my children praise, so too He smiles and loves the way that the praise looks on me! The Bible tells us that when we are overwhelmed, when we are under heavy str

We Will Never Forget

We will never forget the lives that were lost and the families that have never been the same because of that horrific act of violence against our nation. Today, those families still hurt, first responders still deal with residual effects of all that happened that morning. So we continue to pray for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to embrace them and hold them close. Our country lost some brave people that day. Life changed. Our world changed. We were forever changed. And we will never forget. #NationalDayofServiceandRemembrance #PatriotDay

Defeating Depression

Too many people suffer from depression today. It always seems to be the happiest people that are the most depressed. Of all the cases we hear about in the media that is probably true.  Happiness cannot be found in a job, a spouse, a home or in acquiring some level of financial success. Personally, I believe you can not be truly happy until you are in union with your Creator and doing what you were intrinsically gifted to do. People wrestle with success. They become dependent on other people or things. On jobs and circumstances. Others become hyper-dependent on substances which can lead to addiction and other dark behaviors.  We don't have to live overwhelmed. I also believe that we don't have to be stuck on meds that change more than the symptoms we fight.  It's not the load you are carrying that harms you...it's the way you carry it.  God loves us: He loved YOU so much that he sent his son to become sin and die on a cross for your sins and weaknesses. You can

Fight the Good Fight!

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may  wage the good warfare , having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:18-20 Paul encouraged Timothy to always hold dearly the memory of how he entered into ministry and to use those memories to fuel his passion to fight the good fight of faith. Being in ministry and using your talents and skills for the Lord is a battle! Many folks pray to be in full-time ministry and then once they get into it, realize that they should have prayed differently:) When was the last time you fought for something that was important to you? When was the last time you fought for someone else? Too often we give in to things that should not be allowed to have power over us. Your family is worth fighti

Let the Holy Spirit Guide You

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.  Galatians 5:16 Yesterday I took a very long walk...in fact I took two of them. For the last several weeks I have been seeking more wisdom and clarity in every decision that I make. As I continued to walk, my mind started racing(along with my heart) and rather than finding clarity I began to hear many voices. Some were shouting and some were whispering. None of them were completely understandable. It seemed that all they were assigned to do was give me a headache! It was in the midst of the noise that I simply asked the Holy Spirit to guide me. There are just some things that cannot be understood except by the Spirit of God. Once that prayer left my mouth I felt some of the voices leave and the peace of God consume me. The Holy Spirit changed everything around me. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit to be guided through life...to see the choices of places, people and things all lin

Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day! Please be safe and have an amazing day off of work if you can! If you are working today, thank the Lord for your job, your boss and your paycheck!! God is so good to us!
