Walking with the Shepherd

A Cup of Joe devotional series walking through Psalm 23

You Don't Have to Figure It All Out

Scripture: Psalm 23:1 (ESV)

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Have you ever noticed how much energy we spend trying to make sure we have everything we need?

We plan for the future, worry about the bills, think through our next steps, and try to prepare for whatever might be around the corner. Planning isn't wrong. But sometimes, in our effort to manage everything, we forget something important.

We have a Shepherd.

David didn't begin Psalm 23 by talking about his circumstances, his accomplishments, or his ability to handle life. He began with a declaration of trust: “The Lord is my shepherd.”

That changes the way we look at everything else.

A shepherd takes responsibility for leading, protecting, and caring for the sheep. The sheep don't have to know the entire route. They simply need to follow the one who knows the way.

That's a good reminder for us, too.

Following Jesus doesn't mean we'll always understand what's happening or know what comes next. It means we can trust the One who walks with us.

When David says, “I shall not want,” he's not suggesting that we'll never desire something or experience a season of need. He's expressing confidence that the Lord is faithful to provide what we truly need as we follow Him.

Maybe today you're trying to figure everything out. Take a breath. You don't have to see the whole picture to take the next step.

You just need to know who's leading you.

Your Cup of Joe takeaway: You don't have to have all the answers when you're following the One who does.

A moment with God: Lord, help me trust You as my Shepherd throughout this week. Quiet my need to control every outcome and teach me to follow Your lead, one step at a time. Amen.
