When the Pressure Is Loud, Praise Louder

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
1 John 4:4 KJV

Life has a way of applying pressure.

Sometimes it comes through circumstances we never expected. Sometimes it comes through people. Sometimes it is financial, relational, physical, or professional. And sometimes several pressures seem to arrive at the same time.

The interesting thing about pressure is that most of it comes from outside of us.

The phone call.
The diagnosis.
The unexpected bill.
The difficult conversation.
The disappointment.
The uncertainty about tomorrow.

We cannot always control what is pressing against us. But as followers of Jesus, there is something happening inside of us that is greater than anything happening around us.

John said it this way:

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

That changes the equation.

The pressure may be great.

But what is inside you is greater.

Pressure Speaks. Praise Speaks Louder.

Pressure has a voice.

It tells you that you are not going to make it. It reminds you of everything that could go wrong. It magnifies the problem until the problem is all you can see.

Praise changes the conversation.

Praise says, “Yes, this is difficult, but God is still faithful.”

Praise says, “I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I know Who holds tomorrow.”

Praise says, “This situation may be bigger than me, but it isn't bigger than my God.”

Praise does not deny reality. Praise declares that God is greater than the reality confronting us.

That is why praise is so powerful.

Don't Let What's Around You Become What's Within You

Outside pressure becomes dangerous when we allow it to move inside.

We begin carrying conversations that happened hours ago. We replay disappointments. We rehearse possibilities that haven't even happened. Before long, an external circumstance has taken up residence in our heart.

That is where praise becomes a spiritual guardrail.

Praise redirects our attention from what is happening to us toward the One who is living within us.

The circumstances may not immediately change.

But something inside us does.

Fear begins losing its grip.

Peace begins returning.

Perspective begins shifting.

Hope starts breathing again.

Your Internal Environment Matters

You may not control the atmosphere around you, but you can influence the atmosphere within you.

David understood this.

There were moments when enemies surrounded him, circumstances overwhelmed him, and his future looked uncertain. Yet David repeatedly turned his attention toward God.

“I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Psalm 34:1 KJV

Notice what David didn't say.

“I'll praise God when everything settles down.”

He said at all times.

That means praise isn't simply our response when the pressure disappears. Praise can become our response while the pressure is still there.

James Gives Us a Surprising Response to Pressure

James writes:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.”
James 1:2 NIV

That almost sounds unreasonable until we understand what James is saying.

He isn't telling us to enjoy trouble.

He is telling us that trouble doesn't get to determine our attitude toward God.

Trials can test our faith without destroying our faith.

Pressure can actually reveal what has been developing inside us.

Think about it.

When you squeeze an orange, orange juice comes out.

When life squeezes us, something comes out too.

The question is: What has been filling us?

If we continually fill our hearts with fear, fear will surface under pressure.

If we continually fill our hearts with frustration, frustration will surface.

But if we have been filling our hearts with God's Word, God's faithfulness, gratitude, worship, and praise, then when life applies pressure, praise has somewhere to come from.

Praise Before the Pressure Leaves

This may be the hardest part.

Don't wait until the situation changes to praise God.

Praise Him in it.

Praise Him while you're waiting.

Praise Him while you're wondering.

Praise Him when you don't understand.

Praise Him when the answer hasn't arrived.

Praise Him when the door hasn't opened.

Praise Him because your praise isn't based on what God has done in the last five minutes. It is rooted in who God has always been.

Faithful.

Good.

Present.

Powerful.

Merciful.

Near.

Greater Is He

Maybe you've got some outside pressure today.

You don't have to pretend it isn't there.

Acknowledge it.

Pray about it.

Do what you can about it.

But don't allow outside pressure to silence internal praise.

There is Someone living within you who is greater than everything standing against you.

So when pressure says, “You're surrounded,” praise says, “God is with me.”

When pressure says, “There's no way,” praise says, “God can make a way.”

When pressure says, “This is too much,” praise answers, “Greater is He who is in me.”

The pressure may still be real.

But so is His presence.

And when the pressure gets loud...

praise louder.
