Lead Me Forward
There are mornings when you wake up with clarity and confidence.
And then there are mornings when your heart feels heavy before your feet ever hit the floor.
David knew those kinds of mornings.
In Psalm 143, he doesn’t pretend to have it all together. He doesn’t mask his fear, stress, or desperation. Instead, he brings everything honestly before God and asks for what he needs most: direction, protection, and strength for another day.
“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you…”
Psalm 143:8
What a powerful way to begin the day.
Before strategy.
Before decisions.
Before emails.
Before battles.
David wanted to hear from God first.
So many of us start the morning listening to anxiety, pressure, news, deadlines, or our own inner criticism. But the soul was never designed to be led by fear. It was designed to be anchored in the unfailing love of God.
David continues:
“Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.”
That is the prayer of surrender.
Not “Show me how to control everything.”
Not “Show me how to avoid difficulty.”
Simply: “Lord, guide my steps.”
Sometimes we want God to reveal the entire roadmap while He simply offers enough light for the next faithful step. Trust grows when obedience happens one step at a time.
Then David says:
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.”
Life can feel unstable. Emotions shift. Circumstances change. People disappoint. But God’s Spirit still leads His people forward onto firm footing. He steadies what feels shaky. He gives wisdom when confusion clouds the path. Notice something important here: David doesn’t only ask for rescue. He asks to be taught.
Mature faith is not just wanting God to remove trouble. It is wanting God to shape us through it.
Finally, David closes with confidence in God’s character:
“Because of your faithfulness, bring me out of this distress.”
David’s hope was not rooted in his own strength. It was rooted in God’s faithfulness.
And that is where our hope must live too.
You may not know exactly what this season holds. You may be carrying pressure no one else sees. But every morning, the unfailing love of God still meets you fresh. His Spirit still leads forward. His faithfulness still holds firm.
So before you rush into today, pause long enough to pray:
“Lord, let me hear Your unfailing love this morning. Show me where to walk. Lead me forward on firm footing.”
That prayer can change the direction of an entire day.
Cup of Joe (shareable quote)
“The strongest footing in life is not confidence in yourself. It is confidence in the faithfulness of God.”
More Than Directions
We’ve all been at an intersection in life where we ask, “what do I do now?”
There is a scripture in the psalms which will provide us some insight into how the Lord can guide us on our journey.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8 NIV
There are moments when we desperately want God to give us clear direction. We have so many questions:
Should I stay or go?
Do I speak up or stay silent?
Is this the right opportunity?
What step should I take next?
In those moments, we often pray for instruction. We want answers. We want clarity. We want the map.
But Psalm 32:8 reveals something deeper about the heart of God. He does not simply promise to direct us. He promises to develop us.
The verse says:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go…”
At first glance, instruction and teaching sound like the same thing. But they are beautifully different.
Instruction Gives Direction
Instruction is about guidance.
It is God showing us the right path, correcting our course, warning us when we are drifting, and helping us make wise decisions.
Instruction answers questions like:
What should I do?
Which way should I go?
What decision honors God?
Instruction is often immediate and practical.
It is the voice of God saying:
“Slow down.”
“Trust Me.”
“Forgive them.”
“Take the step.”
“Walk away.”
“Be patient.”
Instruction points the way forward.
Teaching Builds Transformation
Teaching goes deeper.
Teaching is not just about what to do. It is about who we are becoming while we do it.
Teaching develops:
wisdom
maturity
discernment
character
spiritual depth
Instruction may change a decision.
Teaching changes a person.
A parent can instruct a child not to touch a hot stove. But teaching explains why the stove burns and how to live wisely around danger.
In the same way, God does not merely want compliant followers. He desires transformed sons and daughters.
Sometimes we want God to give us quick answers while He is trying to grow deep roots.
God Does Not Lead From a Distance
The verse closes with an incredible promise:
“I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
What a picture. God is not detached from your life. He is not issuing commands from a distance and disappearing. His eye is on you. He is attentive. Present. Loving. Involved.
He sees:
the pressure you feel
the uncertainty you carry
the silent prayers you pray
the fears you never say out loud
And He promises counsel, not condemnation.
So what do I do now?
Maybe today you are asking God for instruction.
That is good. Keep asking. But do not miss the teaching season while waiting for the answer.
Because sometimes God is doing two things at once:
guiding your steps
shaping your soul
And often the greater miracle is not just that God showed you the way…
it is that He transformed you along the journey.
Cup of Joe to go…
Instruction tells you where to go.
Teaching shapes who you become.
Counsel reminds you that you never walk alone.
That’s so much more than directions!
Strength for the Weary Heart
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 (NLT)
“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.”
Some days life feels heavy.
The pressure builds, the energy fades, and even simple things can feel difficult. You may show up for work, family, ministry, or responsibilities while quietly wondering how much more you have left to give.
Paul’s words in 2 Thessalonians remind us of something powerful: God never intended for us to live off our own limited strength.
He offers something deeper.
Eternal comfort.
Wonderful hope.
Steadying grace.
The world teaches us to push harder, perform better, and figure it out on our own. But God strengthens hearts before He strengthens hands. He meets us internally so we can continue faithfully externally.
Notice the promise in this passage. God doesn’t just comfort us so we can feel better. He comforts and strengthens us so we can continue doing and saying good things. His encouragement has purpose attached to it.
That means your kindness still matters.
Your faithfulness still matters.
Your words still matter.
Even when you feel tired.
Today, you do not have to manufacture courage on your own. God is able to steady you in the middle of uncertainty and give you the strength needed for what’s in front of you.
So take a breath, lift your eyes, and lean into His grace again. The same God who saved you will sustain you.

Before the day ends, encourage someone else with the same comfort God has given you. A text, a prayer, or a kind word may be exactly what someone needs today.
